INDONESIA berpotensi menjawab permasalahan sampah plastik, baik regional maupun global, sebagai salah satu negara penghasil rumput laut terbesar di dunia. Direktur Jenderal Penguatan Daya Saing Produk Kelautan dan Perikanan (PDSPKP) Artati Widiarti memastikan jajarannya telah melakukan perekayasaan kemasan berbasis rumput laut sejak 2016 dalam bentuk edible film dan edible coating serta kemasan biodegradable pada 2019.
“Kita juga telah melakukan transfer teknologi kemasan rumput laut kepada beberapa pelaku usaha, yakni UKM Pusaka Hati (Mataram), UKM Setiabudi (Lombok Tengah), Mina Horti (Lombok Timur), UKM Saluyu (Sukabumi), dan CV Panda Food (Sleman),” kata Artati dalam keterangannya, Minggu (20/2).
Bahkan, UKM Pusaka Hati, tambah Artati, sudah memproduksi massal kemasan biodegradable Seaweed Bag, sedangkan UKM lain menerapkan edible coating untuk kemasan dodol rumput laut.
Guna mendorong penerapan rumput laut sebagai pengganti kemasan plastik, Kementerian Kelautan dan Perikanan (KKP) juga terus melakukan penyempurnaan inovasi. Terkini, Balai Besar Pengujian Penerapan Produk Kelautan dan Perikanan (BBP3KP) UPT Ditjen PDSPKP menggandeng tim peneliti dari Fakultas Perikanan dan Ilmu Kelautan Universitas Padjadjaran (FPIK Unpad).
“Kita berdiskusi dalam pengembangan kemasan biodegradable berbasis rumput laut yang terjangkau dan bisa diterapkan secara masif,” jelasnya.
Sementara itu, Kepala BBP3KP Widya Rusyanto mengungkapkan sejumlah aspek yang perlu ditingkatkan dalam penyempurnaan kemasan biodegradable ini, yaitu teknik pencetakan dan pengeringan serta karakteristik kemasan dalam menahan laju transmisi uap air.
Saat berkunjung ke FPIK Unpad beberapa waktu lalu, tim BBP3KP menyempatkan diri untuk melihat Pusat Unggulan IPTEK Perguruan Tinggi (PUI-PT) Functional Nano Powder (FINDER U-CoE) dalam rangka mempelajari proses teknologi nano untuk menyempurnakan bioplastik yang sudah ada.
“Penyempurnaan kemasan ramah lingkungan tentu bukan pekerjaan yang mudah jika hanya dilakukan satu institusi saja sehingga dibutuhkan kolaborasi dengan berbagai pihak,” ujar Widya.
Usulan tersebut pun direspons positif Wakil Dekan FPIK Unpad Rita Rostika. Menurutnya, yang dilakukan KKP melalui BBP3KP merupakan upaya pengembangan suatu teknologi berbasis pentahelix atau multipihak, yang mana unsur pemerintah, akademisi, pelaku usaha, masyarakat, dan media seluruhnya bisa ikut terlibat.
“Inisiasi kegiatan ini sejalan dengan kesepakatan bersama antara KKP dan Unpad dalam ruang lingkup penelitian, pengembangan, dan penerapan iptek di bidang kelautan dan perikanan. Semoga pihak BBP3KP, FPIK Unpad, dan PUI Finder Unpad dapat segera membuat Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) dalam penyempurnaan rekayasa kemasan bioplastik rumput laut agar kerja sama kegiatan yang sudah digagas bisa segera terlaksana,” tutur Rita.
Sebelumnya, Menteri Kelautan dan Perikanan Sakti Wahyu Trenggono menyampaikan bahwa rumput laut merupakan anugerah bagi bangsa Indonesia yang dapat didayagunakan secara ekologi, ekonomi, serta sosial untuk menjadi penggerak pembangunan nasional maupun global yang ramah lingkungan dan berkelanjutan.
